The St Lawrence Academy Combined Cadet Force (CCF)

The Combined Cadet Force at The St Lawrence Academy (TSLA) was established in 2023 under the Cadet Expansion Program with the aim of introducing students to new experiences and opportunities that few other organisations could provide. TSLA CCF has grown exponetially over the last 3 years starting with an army section and becoming one of only a handful of CEP schools in the country to expand to a second section. Now offering both the Army and Navy, students at the academy have the ability to experience a wider variety of activities from fieldcraft and navigation to sailing and radio communications. The CCF is run by members of the school’s staff and volunteers from the community, we are also very fortunate to have the support of both Sgt from the Cadet Traing Team (Army) and Area Instructor (Royal Navy) supporting the contingent most weeks.

TSLA CCF recruits every June for the following September start. We charge students £50 for the year and this includes all the uniform and boots. However finance should never stop a student from joining and we always ask parents to get in touch if assistance is required. Students are given taster sesssions to ensure that becoming a Cadet is something they will enjoy. Cadets also have the ability to transfer sections if they wish after trying one for a period of time.

Army Section

The Army section at TSLA is sponsored by the Queens own Yeomanry, a Light Cavalry Regiment of the Army Reserve based in York. Students who join the Army section get to experiance a full range of activities including but not limited to – shooting, archery, navigation, camping, fieldcraft, radio, rock climbing, abseiling and first aid. Students don’t only participate in activities but also work towards a prescribed syllabus and qualifications whilst having fun. Students can gain qualifications and awards including First Aid at Work, IDEA, Duke of Edinburgh and BTEC Level 1,2 in teamwork. Our training year culminates in a 1 week annual camp where students can put their training into practice whilst experiencing new activities.

Royal Navy Section

The Royal Navy section at TSLA is new and has taken in its first cohort of students. Already the students have visited 2 ships, HMS Iron Duke and the P&O Ferry Pride of Hull. The section has many more visits and activities planned this coming year with the boating season shortly starting, students will be taught how to sail on the lake and beaver sailing club before going to Portsmouth to practice firefighting and damage control on the Royal Navy’s simulators. The Royal Navy section offers a wide breadth of leadership courses run at Brittania Royal Naval College throughout the year that we are looking forward to getting our students on. Royal Navy section students can gain qualifications and awards including First Aid at Work, IDEA, Duke of Edinburgh and BTEC Level 1,2 in teamwork.

Cadet Testomonials

Cadet Ryan – Army Section

My experience at cadets so far has been exciting. We’ve done so many activities related to important life skills. Our instructors and senior cadets are always clear with their orders and lessons – there has not been a time that a question has been left unanswered. Overall, I believe cadets is a great way to learn essential functions and tricks in life, in an inclusive and community-based manner.

New Entrant Cadet Dash – RN Section

Within the Navy Cadets, I have learnt so many skills and leadership qualities. Cadets has allowed me to meet so many welcoming people and staff who have supported me the whole way. Additionally, drill is always so fun to do as it allows development to remember what to perform. Lastly, I am proud to wear my uniform.
