A welcome message from Mrs West- Deputy Headteacher for SEND

I have worked at the predecessor school and the Academy since January 2007. I feel very passionate about supporting and treasuring our students, our families and our community. During my time at the academy I have held many roles: a teacher of Mathematics, the SENDCo, the Designated Safeguarding Lead, the Designated Teacher for Looked After Children, the Lead for Inclusion and the Deputy Headteacher for Inclusion and Achievement.  My current role as Deputy Headteacher now focuses on improving SEND and safety and engagement. I am committed to ensuring that the academy is a safe, welcoming place that meets the needs of all so that our vision of treasuring everyone and transforming communities is a reality.

A welcome message from Mrs Nusrat Choudhry- SENDCo

As a former student of High Ridge School, the predecessor to The St Lawrence Academy, I am proud to step into the role of SENDCo, continuing my long-standing connection with the school and the local community. Having lived in Scunthorpe for most of my life, I am deeply committed to supporting the success of students in our area. After studying at John Leggott College, I went on to earn a BA in Sociology and Social Policy from the University of Leeds, which shaped my passion for inclusive education and social equity.

Since joining The St Lawrence Academy in 2011 as a Teacher of Religious Education, I have held several leadership roles, including Achievement Team Leader and House Leader. These experiences have equipped me with the skills to support students holistically, balancing their academic, emotional, and social needs.

With over a decade of experience in education, including leadership in SEND and EAL provision, I bring a proven ability to develop and implement initiatives that empower students to achieve their full potential. In my previous role as Assistant SENDCo and Safeguarding Officer, including EAL Lead, I have built strong relationships with families, staff, and external agencies to create targeted interventions that drive measurable improvements in student outcomes.

My long-standing connection to Scunthorpe combined with my professional expertise, enables me to bring a deep understanding of the needs of our students and families.

I am excited to lead the SEND provision at The St Lawrence Academy, working with our dedicated staff to create an inclusive environment where every student feels supported and valued.

CAN – Assistant SENDCo

I am delighted to introduce myself as one of the newly appointed Assistant SENDCos here at TSLA. Since joining the academy in 2024, I have been deeply committed to fostering a safe, inclusive environment where every student feels they belong. My journey at TSLA began as an Assistant Teacher, where I worked across various year groups, with a particular focus on Mathematics, to ensure students had the tools they needed to succeed in the classroom.

Beyond the classroom, I am proud to serve as the Emerald House Leader. In this role, I champion diversity and work to empower student voices, ensuring our young people feel heard and valued. My approach is built on the strong, consistent relationships I’ve developed with our students and their families. I strive to be a friendly, approachable point of contact for anyone navigating their educational journey.

I am truly passionate about SEND provision. I wholeheartedly believe in our academy motto, ‘Treasuring Everyone, Transforming Community,’ which serves as the cornerstone of my work. Supporting our unique cohort and the diverse demographics of our academy is not just my job, it is my passion. I look forward to continuing to support our young people and their families to ensure every student can thrive

EWT –Assistant SENDCo

I have been working at the St Lawrence academy since 2022, I started out as an SPL. I had the privilege of working with the same year from year 8 all the way up to them leaving in year 11. Nurture has also been one of my responsibilities, working with students with a range of different needs, which is something I have really enjoyed. Before I came to work at St Lawrence I worked as a maths teacher and a teaching assistant.

Dr Hilary Beverley –  Governor

I always wanted to be a teacher. On leaving school I went to university and gained a BA in Biblical Studies and Philosophy. After leaving university I taught in secondary schools one of which was a Church of England school. When we moved to Scunthorpe in 1986 I worked for Adult Community Learning for North Lincolnshire Council for over 25 years teaching Maths and English. During that time I taught many adults with SEND as well as teaching English as a second language. I also  gained an MEd ad PhD both relating to special needs. I have been a governor for over 35 years in Primary and Secondary schools. I was a governor in a special secondary school for over 30 years.

I have been a governor at TSLA for just over 18 months. I believe the key function of a governor is to challenge and support. In order to know a school it is important to speak to staff, students and parents and so I try to attend as many events as possible as well as formal meetings. I became a governor in order to try to ensure that young people  and especially those with SEND are getting the best education possible so that they may flourish in adult life.

I meet with the SEND and Safeguarding leads in school once a term and produce a report about the meeting which then goes to the Governor Meeting. This gives me the opportunity to celebrate what is going well and where adjustments are needed.  I also have informal conversations as well when I am in school.

I believe SEND is important in every school and in the wider community but at TSLA  I hope that  the SEND provision can be of the highest quality and that I am able to contribute to that.

I am passionate about young people with SEND and will seek to do whatever I can to enhance their opportunities for adult life. I hope that my experience will be valuable to TSLA and therefore have some impact. The thing I enjoy most about being a governor is being a part of a vibrant school community to which I can contribute. I also am also pleased to be governor at a school which is multicultural and serves an area which I know well.
